Cicadas live most of their lives out of sight beneath the soil, sucking sap out of tree roots. This stage can last many years, but eventually the earth-toned larvae come out of the earth and transform into beautiful winged creatures to mate and reproduce. Here Luis Recalde, one of our guards, captures the moment when a cloud forest cicada makes this transformation.
